MONTNIC's debut EP The Shades was born from a triptych woodblock print painted over 160 years ago — Sanbijin by Utagawa Toyokuni III.
The model is neither a geisha nor an oiran, but the tsuji-kimi — the lowest of the three, a woman of the street.
She stands in the Edo winter of the Little Ice Age, on the cold road, night after night. In the harshest of conditions, she remains beautiful.
A monotone design that echoes the silence of falling snow.
