The day I returned from Africa, I wanted to find a fabric to display alongside a painting I had bought there — so I headed to the wholesale district. Textiles from every corner of the world were stacked floor to ceiling. And yet, almost everything there bore patterns from tribes in regions I hadn't even visited. Where on earth would I find that fabric?
I wished there were a brand that could put the world's most captivating patterns into the hands of anyone, anywhere, who wanted them. That wish took shape.
Just as good food carries umami, may this fabric that reaches your hands carry umami too. With the hope that a strange magic dwells within it — one that makes you happy every time you see it. That is how UMAMI TEXTILE began.

One day, as I kept thinking about patterns that might feel truly magical, I sank into the sofa, exhausted. When I came to, I was in Edo. Around me stood the faces I had seen in ukiyo-e prints — alive, real. Brimming with curiosity, they grabbed my aviator sunglasses and wouldn't let go.
I woke up. Had it been a dream?
My hand began to move on its own. The face burned into my mind became a T-shirt.
